Carrageen moss.

And here are a few simple steps to prepare your very own Donegal cough bottle:
You will only need a little bit of this beautiful looking dried seaweed, a small handful will do. Wash it under a tap, then bring it to boil in cold water. Use just enough water to cover and a little bit more.
From now it will be the Carrageen water and not the moss you use. You will find the water has gone a bit jelly like or wobbly. Here you see why this stuff comes in so handy as an gelling agent for puddings and the like. Take out the remains of the moss and very carefully squeeze out all its remaining goodness. The moss will be a good addition to your compost heap. Now, the best way to use your Carrageen jelly, especially for the little ones, is in a hot drink. Make up your drink with a freshly squeezed whole lemon (you can combine it with an orange), a good teaspoon full of honey and add two tablespoons of the jelly. Adults may add a fresh crushed clove of garlic. Top up with hot water, stir and drink it slowly about 3 times a day, and especially at night. |
With that I wish you a healthy start in the year, and avoid getting those nerve wrecking colds and coughs! But if you do catch one, well before hurrying to the pharmacist, try out this old effective remedy with no side effects, and remember: It wasn't all bad back then. Old wisdom needs to be preserved.
Slainte!
